I recently launched a personal website. It’s been a long time coming.
There’s a term for it: The Cobbler’s children have no shoes. When you’re in the business of serving others, your business tends to sit on the back burner.
My goal was to become more searchable as a real estate branding and marketing strategist. My business is Post & Beam Creative, and as the face of it, I needed a personal home on the internet that reflected that, a place that established my authority and said, clearly and confidently, “This is who I am, this is what I do and this is where I do it,” in a way that Google and AI could actually find me.
How to become more searchable online
Here are the things that made the biggest difference. If you’re a real estate agent reading this, these same moves apply to you.
1. Schedule a lifestyle photo session. Not just a headshot
This was a game-changer for me. I worked with a talented photographer, and what she captured was 100 percent me: moving, laughing and being expressive. I’m a total goofball, and that came through in so many of the shots.
My advice: Wear clothes that make you feel confident, comfortable and rooted in your power. Then move. Sit. Stand. Let your personality show up. A great lifestyle session gives you a library of images that can carry your brand across your website, social media and beyond. It’s worth every penny.
2. Put your expertise front and center, and keep it consistent everywhere
Right after your name, your expertise should be clear and unmistakable. If you’re a real estate agent, it’s what you do and where you serve.
Then make sure that language is consistent across your entire digital footprint: your website, LinkedIn, Instagram bio, Google Business Profile, Zillow and anywhere else you show up online. Consistency is how search engines and AI tools learn to trust you and surface you in the right searches.
3. Location, location, location
You already know this in real estate. But it applies to your brand, too.
If you’re a buyer’s agent in the South End of Boston, say that. If you specialize in waterfront properties on Cape Cod, make sure your website, your bio, and your content say Cape Cod repeatedly and naturally.
AI tools and search engines are now geographically smart. If your location isn’t woven into your digital presence, you’re invisible to the people searching right in your own backyard.
4. Make your page titles and meta descriptions work as hard as your bio does
This is the behind-the-scenes stuff most people skip, and it matters more than ever.
Your page title is the clickable headline that appears in Google search results. Your meta description is the short summary underneath it. Together, they’re your first impression before someone even lands on your site.
Write them the same way you’d introduce yourself at a networking event. Lead with your name, your specialty and your location. Instead of a generic “Home | Jane Smith Realty,” try something like: “Jane Smith | Boston Real Estate Agent Specializing in the South End.” Clear, specific and searchable.
Most website platforms like Squarespace, Wix and WordPress let you customize these for every page without any technical know-how. Take the 20 minutes. It’s one of the highest-leverage things you can do for your search visibility.
5. Write like a human, not a robot
The best thing you can do for your Google and AI searchability is create content that actually sounds like you. A short bio written in your voice. A blog post about a neighborhood you love. An FAQ answering the questions your clients always ask.
AI tools like ChatGPT are pulling from personal websites and blogs more than ever. If you have original, authentic content on your site, you increase your chances of showing up not just in search results but also in AI-generated answers, too.
6. Claim, complete and post on your Google Business Profile
If you haven’t done this yet, stop everything and do it today. It’s free, and it’s one of the most powerful things you can do for local search.
Add your photo. Include your specialty and location in your description. Ask past clients for reviews. Keep it up to date by repurposing your social media content for your Google Business profile. Google rewards profiles that are complete, active and consistent with the rest of your online presence.
